King Farms
Heirloom Tomatoes are coming out nicely and harvest of 99% of all 43 varieties is underway. I know I said 35 varieties last week, but the Kings told me last week they had upped the planting. Reggae Radishes are looking great and will be available til mid December. These mildly spicy red gems are a great addition to any salad. Cilantro is coming out great and is in good supply. The smell of fresh-cut cilantro is intoxicating; and priced to meet current market value. If you use cilantro, you should give these a try. Red, Yellow and White stemmed Swiss Chard is available and in good supply. The color of these are amazing due to the freshness available to you. Turnip Greens are available and taste great. Supply is good. Red Chinese Noodle Beans are now available in good supply. Asian Mosaic Beans are now available. Supply is good. Purple and Green Podded Pole beans are now available. The first Multi-colored Carrots will be available this week. This does include the Deep Purple variety (this is the variety that is purple throughout the carrot). Red Leave Lettuce looks and taste great! I had it last night and King Farms has another beauty on their hands!

Watercress Farms
Red and Green Watercress are available in good supply. We thank you for the orders we received before you actually saw these. I heard over and over again the comment “I have never seen Watercress so fresh”. As a surprise, Watercress Farms offered baby arugula last week that some of you took advantage of. David and/or Guy will let me know each week when they can do this. Drop me a note if you would like me to call you with what is available. Falglo Tangerines harvest has ended and now the Sunburst Tangerines are available. Supply is good. Rio Red and Flame Grapefruit are being harvested and supply is excellent. The flavors are excellent also – think of what you’ve had in the past and multiply it by 2. These are a great example of why fresh-picked is the way to go!

Corn is ending very soon. I know I keep saying this, but they continue to mature. Please call me on availability. Acorn, Spaghetti and Buttercup squashes are still available, but supply has dropped to good to fair. Butternut Squash harvest has ended. Eggplant remains in good supply. Collard greens and spinach are available in good supply. Strawberries are in the ground and you can expect harvest to begin in January.

Alan Jones also has a large garden area available and are taking suggestions on what you would like to have grown for you. Think of what you would like a good supply of for spring. [Introduced in 1990 by SESE Heirloom from Polk Co., Minn.] This is the most visually spectacular tomato we have grown. As fruits ripen they resemble a rainbow: green on the shoulder, yellow in the middle, and red on the blossom end. When fully ripe, the fruits are gold on the stem end and red on the blossom end. Early fruits weigh over 2 lbs. with little catfacing or deformities. 'Big Rainbow' has very good resistance to foliar disease and continues to bear until frost.

Brandywine tomatoes can bear fruit up to 1 lb (0.5 kg), requiring 80 to 100 days to reach maturity, making it among the slowest maturing varieties of common tomato cultivars. Brandywine has been described as having a "great tomatoey flavor"[1], (others have called it a beautifully sweet tomato that is offset by a wonderful acidity), leading to heavy usage despite the original cultivar's relatively low yield per plant. Its fruit has the beefsteak shape and pinkish flesh, as opposed to the deep red of more common store bought varieties. Even when fully ripe, the tomato can have green shoulders near the stem. The Brandywine tomato plant also has potato leaves, an unusual variation on the tomato plant whose leaves are smooth and oval with a pointy tip, instead of jagged and fjord-like the way "normal" tomato plant leaves are.

When the 6th Earl of Edgecombe died in the 1960's, the heir to the title of 7th Earl was a relative in New Zealand who was a sheep farmer at the time. When he traveled to England to claim the title, he brought this tomato with him. The seeds for this New Zealand heirloom were made available through Carolyn Male, who found it the best of her 1996 seed trials. The smooth, 3-inch, round, uniformly ripening fruits are beautiful orange globes, typically borne in clusters of two or more. Flesh is firm, meaty and exceptionally flavorful.

Tomato seeds for this tall, leafy variety were sent to me in 1990 from a gardener in Boone County, WV who shared that he had been growing these, and a favorite red variety for 40 years. He was given the tomato seeds from his Uncle who had grown them in Tennessee. For the past several years I included them in my seed trials under the name "No Name #4", and harvested the seeds each year from a few preferred fruits. In 2006 while eating some of this fruit just off the vine, I found myself so pleased with the flavor that I said to my wife, "Now this (slurp) is my kind of gold!" She suggested I call it "Gary Ibsen's Gold," harvest more tomato seeds, and share it with our friends. Plant produces lots of very juicy, 14 oz. , brilliant orange-gold globes with tropical fruit flavors with enough acid balance to guarantee a burst of tomato delight
